Countries

The IADP initially focused on South Africa, so as to develop and test the necessary systems and processes in a relatively favorable operating environment. It has since extended its programs into Malawi and Botswana, and it is preparing the ground in Namibia. The project in Malawi and Botswana has two main thrusts, firstly to provide discounted digital texts to staff and students accessed from digital reading rooms as well as private laptops. Secondly, it promotes the creation, adaptation and remixing of Open Education Resources (OER) into texts and courses to support the student body by providing affordable quality materials.

The IADP has recently built a consensus among publishers for the distribution of substantially discounted e-books in 21 countries in other parts of Africa and South Asia.

Announcements

During 2009 the University of Malawi (UNIMA) embarked on two exciting and innovative OER projects, one at the Kamuzu College of Nursing and the second at the Bunda College of Agriculture. These projects were co-funded by the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA) and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and facilitated jointly by SAIDE’s OER Africa Initiative and the International Association for Digital Publications (IADP). The initial project resources have been completed and together with insights to the process are now available on the OER Africa website.
